Let us examine some general examples first. 1. __ is the vehicle that in case of an emergency takes people to a hospital. If you’re going to see a doctor, then you go to a doctor’s office. Moreover, if you have an advanced degree, you graduated from the university. Parts of a university are referred to as schools, departments, or colleges. In English, the word 2. ____ denotes professors in an educational institution, and not the institution itself. Eventually means finally, in the end. If you’d like to say something is possible, use possibly, or potentially.

When we get down to business, 3. __ can be confusing. It has several meanings: a clause in a legal instrument, a supply or stock of something provided, and in plural form, provisions, it means supplies of food. If you want to say someone is getting a percentage of an amount, use the word 4. ____. Therefore, it means an amount or percentage that is given to a person for their services or job done. Commission can also refer to authority granted for a particular action or function. The Croatian equivalent that is usually confused with commission (komisija), is not related to the English word at all. There are several words to use when it comes to a group of people who are in charge of making a decision or providing advice or direction: board, committee, council or panel.

Further, 5. __ is most commonly used to mean the amount of a charge or payment with reference to some basis of calculation (e.g., high interest rate on loans). If you have a house or a car loan, the monthly payments you’re making on these is called an 6. ____.

  1. __ refer to an apparent probability of advancement, success, profit, etc.; the outlook for the future (e.g., good business prospects); chances; and a potential candidate, client, or purchaser. The booklet that contains basic information and usually pictures depicting a place, products, and/or services is called a 8. __. Finally, 9. ___ means a person’s involvement or curiosity for a topic/person, but it also refers to the amounts or percentage charged for borrowing money from a financial institution.

Keep in mind the difference between 10. __ and interesting. “I am interested in doing business with you”, but “Doing business with you is an interesting option”. The word prospect means something expected, a possibility, but it is primarily used in its plural form, 11. ____.

Although some words that look alike have similar meanings in different languages, if you are uncertain it is better to assume that they do not.

Exercise 1 Complete the sentences with the correct form: interest, interested, interesting.

  1. If you’re paying less than 6 percent ______ on your house loan, you really got a great deal.

  2. They have a bad reputation for not paying their suppliers on time, so I am not particularly ______ in dealing with them.

  3. Having a genuine ______ in people is a necessary condition for all service jobs.

  4. The proposal is ______ but we need more time to think about it.

  5. Although he made some ______ arguments, she was still not convinced.

Exercise 2 Fill in the blanks with one of the following words (note: there are more words than you need): interest, ambulance, installment prospects, rate, brochure.

  1. The ______ arrived very quickly after he had a heart attack.

  2. The travel agency was very unhappy with the way the ______ were printed because they did not depict the scenery of the destinations very well.

  3. The average interest ______ for home buyers is currently 6.78 percent.

  4. The monthly ______ for your car cannot exceed one fourth of your income.

  5. Sales people who work for a ______ rather than a fixed salary are usually more motivated to do well, because their income depends on how much they sell.

Exercise 3 Translate the following sentences into English:

a. U recesiji kamatne stope padaju da bi se potrošači potaknuli na dizanje većih kredita.

b. Poslovni izgledi trenutačno nisu najbolji.

c. Možda ćemo vam moći pomoći, ali moram najprije razgovarati sa svojim šefom.

d. U ovoj prodavaonici doista su ljubazni. Mislim da njihovi prodavači rade na proviziju.

e. Iako smo zainteresirani za njihove usluge, kompanija ima vrlo loš ugled, zato mislim da nećemo s njima poslovati.
