Italy’s largest supermarket chain Coop Italia unveiled its ‘supermarket of the future’ which offers an innovative and personalised shopping experience.
The flagship store is located within the Bicocca University campus in Milan, and is based on the showcased concept at Milan Expo in 2015.
Products are exhibited in the supermarket on large interactive tables where a movement of the hand shows augmented information about the product on an overhead monitor.
Shoppers can find out about each product’s origins, nutritional information, sustainability credential and other relevant products and promotions. This capability is powered by Microsoft Kinect sensors.
Coop Italia also worked with Accenture to implement technology around the store.
Coop Italia’s vision of the store of the future merges the physical and digital shopping worlds to recreate an atmosphere of local open-air markets, combined with innovative digital solutions that provide useful product information, whilst improving store navigation.
As the online channel gains market share it will become even more important and challenging for physical stores to remain relevant and engaging to entice shoppers to visit.
