Exercise 1 Use some of the words from the glossary to complete the sentences.

  1. Their plans to set up their own business are just pie-in-the-sky.

  2. The newspapers are always full of doom and gloom (= bad news and unhappiness) these days.

  3. The Swedes are not alone in finding their language under pressure from the ubiquitous spread of English.

  4. There are heavy odds against people succeeding in such a bad economic climate.

  5. Lack of communication causes serious problems and the situation in their company is discomfort.

Exercise 2 Match the words with their definitions:

a. PIE-IN-THE-SKY | 4. something that you hope will happen but which is very unlikely to happen

b. UBIQUITOUS | 7. seeming to be in all places

c. A CASE IN POINT | 1. to suddenly start to be successful or popular

d. to TAKE OFF | 1. to suddenly start to be successful or popular

f. FORESIGHT | 2. the ability to judge correctly what is going to happen in the future and plan your actions based on this knowledge
