Long and Short trips

Have you been on a trip lately? How long was the journey? Did you enjoy the sea voyage? The English words in bold can simply be translated as putovanje in Croatian, but what kind of putovanje are we talking about? To clear any misunderstandings, if you are going on a short trip you will be travelling for a short period of time, whereas a long trip implies a longer period and/or distance. We often use phrases such as a day trip as opposed to a long journey or even a journey of life. As children, many of us loved books by Jules Verne, often featuring a lengthy adventurous journey, such as described in “The Journey to the Centre of the Earth.”

And what about travels and other types of putovanje?

My car doesn’t have enough luggage space so I have to travel light.

Last week my friends decided to go on a short trip to the mountains in the area. Maria is afraid of flying so she is going on a month-long journey across the Atlantic. An archeological expedition was organised to explore the remains of an ancient Egyptian tomb. We went on a business trip to Shanghai. It is a three-day journey by bus. A perfect holiday would be to go on a two-week tour of Italy, to visit all of its major towns. They went on a pilgrimage to the shrine of St James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Travelling by boat/ ship/ yacht is going on/ making a voyage. Going on a day trip with a group of people for the purpose of sightseeing is going on/ taking an excursion. Visiting a place of religious or spiritual interest is going on/ making a pilgrimage. Travelling for the purpose of a scientific exploration is going on an expedition. Travelling for a longer period of time or longer distance is going on/ making a long trip.

Going on a trip by boat to visit a number of attractions: going on a cruise. Travelling by plane: flying. Travelling from place to place with the final return to the starting point: going on a round trip. Travelling for a short period of time or shorter distance: going on/ taking a short trip.
